  The selected_student_id wasn't present in the session. I have no idea how that happened, perhaps an issue with the browser used? I wasn't able to recreate this.

  Another option would be to put the student_id in the url, but I'd have to rework authorization to use that instead of being session based. If this comes up again, I think I will end up doing that.
