SSL expiry and replacemtn
Domain name replacement.
Tentative recommendation:
1. Buy new domain name ASAP
2. Renew old domain name.
3. Notify users. Have everyone switch by April.
4. Setup redirect to new site with message about switching.
For this, we need an additional IP address.
Once SSL certificate expires, users will see an error which depends on browser.
options, renew simspilot.org ssl as well which is $500 extra.
I should also solicit the advice of railsmachine.
SNI might be another possibility, but would exclude ie6 and older browsers.

wisims.org sslOptions for different companies
I recommend staying with the existing company for simspilot.org otherwise users will see a warning about changing certificates. Users making SSL requests to simspilot.org (without the subdomain) may see an error depending on their browser.Whenever we're ready (but with enough time for the transition) we can do wisims.org. I'd prefer to this with a different company, so that we could handle requests to just wisims.org (without a subdomain)
I contacted railsmachine to see how much an additional IP address would be.

users logging in can be notified.
scripted commands (by LSA's) will need to be changed to the new domain before it expires. (In theory here, we could keep the simspilot.org name, but just drop the ssl certificate and things could still work.)

base domain is $49 = 248 requires additional ip.I asked railsmachine to provision 3 additional IP addresses, this makes the cert cost ~$250 per year per domain which is the best I will find.

investigate godaddy $12.99 for single domain certs, $199 for wildcard?
investigate namecheap as well.
